What will you do
A journey through time to discover the Stone City of Zungri, one of the most fascinating rock-cut sites in Calabria. In about 2 hours you will visit ancient dwellings carved into the rock, paths carved in stone, and the museum of peasant civilization, accompanied by stories that weave together archaeology, spirituality, and everyday life.

Start experience
The experience begins with the meeting at the Museum of Rupestrian and Rural Civilization of Zungri, housed in an old olive mill. Here, a guide will introduce the history of the village and the rupestrian settlement, illustrating the hypotheses about the origins of the community of the “Sbariati” and the role of this place over the centuries.
The visit to the museum allows visitors to observe about 3,000 artifacts linked to rural and domestic life: agricultural tools, implements, peasant objects, and testimonies that help us understand the relationship between people, the land, and subsistence.

Key moment
The route continues inside the Stone City, a rock settlement of about 3,000 square meters, made up of nearly 100 dwellings carved into sandstone between the 9th and 14th centuries.
You will walk along paths and stairways carved into the rock, exploring single-room dwellings and more complex homes spread across different levels. The guide will explain what daily life was like: from areas used for resting to spaces for storing grain, all the way to production sites such as the wine press and the lime kiln for processing lime.
Among domes with ventilation holes, niches carved into the walls, and ancient water collection systems, the charm of a community probably linked to the Italo-Greek and Basilian tradition will emerge. The similarities with iconic places like Matera or Cappadocia make Zungri a unique site, often defined as the “little Petra of Calabria”.

Return
The visit concludes with a final moment dedicated to curiosities, questions and panoramic views of the landscape of the Poro plateau. An accessible and engaging cultural experience, ideal for families, history enthusiasts or simply for those who wish to discover a less known, authentic and surprising Calabria.
