Description

This urban hiking leads to the discovery of Old Cosenza. The ancient capital of the Bruzia Federation is known as the Athens of Calabria thanks to the historic Accademia Cosentina, a prestigious cultural center attended by writers, artists, and scholars since the Renaissance.

The route highlights the idea of the city perched on seven hills and its historical relationship with the Crati and Busento rivers, intertwining architecture, art, and local stories that span almost a millennium of history.
The walk starts from Piazza dei Bruzi and continues along medieval alleys with noble palaces, ancient courtyards, and panoramic views of the valley.

The route will lead to:

  • the scenic Piazza XV Marzo (with a view of the Teatro Rendano) and Government Palace (interior by authorization)

  • the Diocesan Museum (open with free admission), which houses important sacred art pieces: precious reliquaries, liturgical vestments, and refined medieval artifacts

  • the Catedral Church (free entrance), recognized by UNESCO as a testimony of a culture of peace: its interior, rich in history and spirituality, preserves elements ranging from Gothic to elegant Baroque renovations.

  • It concludes with the Bilotti Open Air Museum on Corso Mazzini, which enriches the urban center with contemporary art pieces

The itinerary is designed for visitors of all ages: the explanations contextualize works, anecdotes, and local legends with rigor and simplicity, offering an accessible reading of the urban heritage.
