Description
A ring route immersed in the industrial history and nature of the Serre. From the area of Monte Corvo, the trail intersects the bed of the former Decauville railway (1860), which was created for the transport of timber from Ferdinandea to the Ionian coast: a gentle and panoramic track that crosses woods of holm oak, chestnut, beech, and white fir in the Site of Community Importance “Bosco di Stilo” within the Serre Park.
The itinerary will cover the surroundings of Lake Giulia, a small artificial reservoir on the Stilaro, which was used in the past for collecting water for a hydroelectric power station located near the Marmarico Falls. It will brush past the Mangiatorella spring, inaugurated in 1904 by the Garibaldi volunteer Achille Fazzari, an opportunity to narrate the intertwining of waters, forests, and early productive activities at altitude. The journey continues to the Ferdinandea steelworks, where structures and visitable areas of the complex commissioned in the 19th century by Ferdinand II of Bourbon for iron processing are still visible.
Amidst carpets of leaves, old stone walls, and miniature railway art, the path brings back the rhythm of narrow-gauge trains and the breath of the woods: an open-air lesson in industrial archaeology in the heart of the Site of Community Importance “Bosco di Stilo”.
