Description

Description

The path begins at località Droma, from which one crosses the heart of the Mediterranean scrub, with spectacular views of the Stilaro valley and the sea. Along the way, the trail runs alongside the river, leading step by step towards the waterfall.

The destination is the Cascata del Marmarico, in the Vallone Folea, within the Parco delle Serre. With its 120 meters of height over three drops, it is the tallest in the southern Apennines and one of the most scenic in Italy, so much so that it has been recognized as a “Wonder of Italy.” The name derives from the dialectal marmaricu (“heavy, slow”), due to the apparent stillness of its flow.

The path also preserves traces of industrial archaeology: between 1928 and 1938, a hydroelectric power plant was built here that illuminated the valley, destroyed by a flood in 1972 and now part of the hydraulic energy museum.

Along the way, one encounters unique naturalistic elements: a majestic monumental black alder that announces the arrival at the waterfall, and Hildenbrandia rivularis, a red alga that grows only in pure waters, a sign of the exceptional environmental quality of the Stilaro river.
