Description

Description

Africo Vecchio is one of the most evocative ghost towns in Aspromonte. Abandoned in the mid-20th century, it is now reachable only on foot along a trail that preserves its authenticity and the charm suspended in time.

The circular itinerary starts from the Park Gate and leads through stone-paved paths, old mills, and popular houses now in ruins. Among the main stops are the former Carabinieri barracks, the elementary school, and the Church of San Nicola, which tell stories of a not-too-distant past.

Continuing, the path crosses oak and chestnut woods up to the small church of San Leo, a destination for annual pilgrimages. From here, spectacular views open up: from the valleys of the La Verde river to the unmistakable profile of Monte Iofri, even catching sight of the waterfalls of Ferraina and Aposcipo on clearer days.

The return is along a mule track carved into the rock, which completes the loop offering still breathtaking glimpses of Montalto and Puntone della Guardia. An experience that unites history, nature, and collective memory in one of the most iconic places in Aspromonte.
